THE phenomenon that is Will Young gave a stunning performance at a completely sold-out O2 Academy.
Throughout the Sunday evening show fans were treated to little chats from the singer who gossiped about Strictly Come Dancing – revealing who had been voted off that night – and shared anecdotes and stories about things that has happened on the tour so far.
The set was filled with tracks from his new album, along with Will’s classic hits like Changes, Light My Fire, You and I and Leave Right Now.
With an encore of Kate Bush classic Running Up That Hill, an acoustic version of Evergreen and hit single Jealousy he rounded off a brilliant show in true Will Young style.
I overheard one fan saying, “He just gets better every time I see him!”.

It’s been almost 10 years since Will Young entered the nation’s hearts by winning the TV talent show Pop Idol. Breaking away very quickly from the preconceived ideas of music moguls he very quickly established a successful and enduring music career outlasting all his fellow pop idol competitors.
These last few months he has been touring the UK with his band to promote the release of his new album Echoes. Will’s visit to St David’s Hall on Saturday evening was the last concert of the tour of which his performance truly went out with a bang.
Music acts Jodie Marie and Lawson kept the crowd entertained for 90 minutes while everyone patiently waited for Will. Lawson did a splendid rendition of Katy Perry’s Firework mixed in with their own particular brand of excellent music.
After a short break to reset the stage the band entered through a strategically positioned black door, with each member receiving a tremendous roar of approval from the audience. However, the biggest welcome was saved for Will Young himself.
Will treat the audience to a review of his whole career so far including his startling version of Light My Fire, Evergreen,
Leave Right Now and Come On from his latest album. My personal highlights included his version of Silent Valentine where thousands of red hearts appeared to fall from the heights onto Will and The Game, of which he provided a very energetic performance. An excellent evening was had by all and judging by the enormous reception Will received from the Cardiff audience, a decade on, he is much more than a Pop Idol!

FORMER talent show-winner, Will Young proved when he sang at the BIC, that his appeal is as strong now as it has always been.
With bright lights, live band and backing singers, this is the show that reminds you th`at dreams have come true thanks to reality TV. Mr Young sang his classic hits, including the song that made him the winner of Pop Idol, way back in 2002, Evergreen, as well as ‘Leave Right Now’.
He is the best example of a well-known face keeping grounded after being thrust into the spotlight. Will got the audience up to dance, made a light-hearted joke when a minor thing didn’t go to plan on stage and is earnest to the core in his whole demeanour and persona. Most importantly, he appears likeable and hasn't let fame go to his head.
He is energetic, keen and still enjoying being popular almost a decade after he started out. I predict that this man will continue to be a success for many years to come. Part of the set, a front door on stage, which each musician walked through at the start and end of the show, became a feature of the concert, as did a yo-yo given to him by one of his fans in the front seats. By the end of the show, the audience was upstanding for his final upbeat hit, Jealousy..

AFTER trying his hand at TV acting last year in the long-running detective series Miss Marple and then again earlier this year in Sky Living's surprise ghost drama hit Bedlam, original Pop Idol winner Will Young is back doing what he does best.
Now with a third number one album under his multi-talented belt, Young was aiming to prove a few people wrong after what was described by some as a "slightly disappointing" last visit to the city in 2008.
He silences the doubters early on as we are taken on an enjoyable 90-minute journey of his back catalogue of hits, with a few new ones thrown in to smartly balance things out.
The wondrous Changes and the insanely loveable cover of The Doors' Light My Fire are early highlights.
Young is helped by a talented backing band of drums, guitars and keyboards, along with a sensational set of female singers.
The charismatic singer has come a long way since his 2001 Pop Idol win and while his first album is still admirable enough, it's only when he's performing his more impressive recent material (Outsider and Losing Myself) that he seems most at ease.
The night's only downside comes in the shape of the disappointing 2005 hit Switch It On, although still performed admirably, it's a song I prefer to forget. It's the only weak link in five albums' worth of otherwise great material.
After a rousing response for monster hit Leave Right Now, Young heads off for a quick wardrobe change before making his way back onstage for the inevitable encore. A breathtaking rendition of Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill is up first and is quickly followed by a fresh reworking of debut number one hit Evergreen.
We are then cleverly introduced to the band in song, with Young using a made-up rhyme for each member to the tune Hit The Road Jack.
Current album hit Jealously is last up and shows Young's new edgy dance sound, arguably his best work to date.
That brings the curtain down on a truly memorable evening.
While some talent show winners, including Steve Brookstein, Shayne Ward and Leon Jackson have disappeared, this shy lad turned pop prince showed why he's still here, 10 years on.

Say what you like about showbiz reality shows – sometimes the discovery-making end justifies the undignified means.
Yes, it’s a cattle market; yes, shows like The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent sometimes pander to the worst common denominator in order to feed the media frenzy; yes, there’s an uncomfortable, freak show element to the whole concept.
But when a process succeeds in shining a light on genuine talent - another three yeses going to, let’s say, Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle, Will Young – it has to be forgiven.
Regardless of your music taste or pretentions, there’s no denying that these artists are gifted vocalists and performers; nor that their voices may never have been heard had it not been for their auditions alongside a few alien life forms.
The format’s not perfect, but it sometimes delivers and when it does, it’s worth all the pain.
Will Young, for one, proves the point admirably. He stepped out of the frantic hype of the first Pop Idol – incredibly, some 10 years ago now - and calmly went on to carve out a lasting career, consistently taking top industry awards and selling over eight million albums – three of his five to date have been number ones.
His concerts are routine sell-outs, testimony not only to his remarkable voice but also to his warm stage presence; his unique ‘one of us-ness’, instant likeability, that puts his audience so completely at ease and sets the stage for one of those all-too-rare momentary escapes from the hard edges of this world.
Will’s recent ‘homecoming’ gig (he studied and lived in Oxford), part of his Echoes tour, was no exception. He delivered everything his ever-growing and devoted fan-base has come to expect – a flawless performance, effortless shifting of gear from sublime ballad to hi-energy pop and jazz, peppered with intimate and funny anecdotes and observations.
Ultimately, it’s his voice that gilds the night. Supremely note-perfect offerings of all those staple hits, from Light My Fire and Leave Right Now to Evergreen and Surrender, as well as numbers from his latest album, Echoes – notably, Jealousy, Silent Valentine, Losing Myself, Hearts on Fire.
If you’re not already a fan, you might be surprised at how easily you become a convert – at the very least, you’ll discover why Will Young’s voice continues to get so many yes votes a decade on.
